Some Track Facts
The Indianapolis Speedway was built originally as a test facility for the burgeoning Indiana car industry, the track
was paved with 3.2 million bricks following a series of races in 1909. Since 1911, the Brickyard has hosted one of the
most famous races in the world, the Indianapolis motor speedway 500-Mile Race. Indianapolis 500 Tickets contd.
In the inaugural 1994 Brickyard 400, Hoosier fan favorite Jeff Gordon won the first of his three titles (see pictures on
the "Schedule" page.
The dimensions of the track are virtually the same
as when it was built in 1909; 5/8-mile straightaways and 1/8-mile short "chutes" connected by 1/4-mile turns, each
banked 9 degrees, 12 minutes. Indianapolis 500 Tickets contd. IndyCars accelerate from 0 to 100 mph in four seconds. At 238 mph, drivers cover 350 feet
of the track per second. The fastest "500" drivers attain speeds of 240 mph along the straightaways. At this rate of
speed, if a driver blinks his eyes, he misses 50 feet of track ! Indianapolis 500 Tickets contd.
